One Love Interview with Movementbago's Nicolette Leacock
OL: Can you take us through the journey: from Movementbago conception to where you are now? NL: MovementBago was not something that I had planned out from the start. The idea for it came from the fact that I was the only Tobagonian at my school and I realized that a lot of people are quite familiar with Trinidad but are a lot less aware of the other half of the Twin island republic, so I wanted something that just said TOBAGO. I taught myself to use some software and started making designs. It's been a very cool process learning how this industry works and I think that I am much more aware of what I'm doing now compared to when I just started! |
OL: Were you expecting this kind of reaction initially; how did you feel?
NL: I had no idea what to expect, it's always a bit nerve racking putting something out into the public domain but I was excited and happy! I received a tremendous response within the first few days which let me know that people were interested in the product.
OL: What's been most shocking to you since forming your own startup?
NL: The most shocking thing has probably been getting messages from people as far as Austria asking me about where they can purchase T-shirts!

"I want people to love Tobago as much as I do and to understand that it is a place that is full of potential with both its resources and people! My #Paradi$eCapital." - Nico Leacock
"My focus is gaining more awareness in the international market."
OL: In what ways do you think, your business-oriented college experience has influenced your Movementbago/business approach?
NL: Well I'm currently pursuing a double major in Business Management and Marketing so I make an effort to apply everything that I'm [currently] learning to all aspects of my business. It makes learning much more interesting when you have plans to implement the stuff right away.

OL: What has been your proudest or most enjoyable experience since launching this project?
NL: My proudest moment so far was when I donated $5,000 of proceeds from the T-shirt sales to the Happy Haven School for children with disabilities in January of this year. I plan to continue to give back to different organizations in Tobago and my project for 2015 is called Girls Score Goals!
It's in collaboration with my football (soccer) club, the St. Clair's Coaching School and it is an initiative to encourage more young girls on the island to get involved in the sport. I hope to inspire them to score goals on and off the field! I will be donating tons of football equipment and our launch on January 3rd of 2015 will feature players from our Women's National Football team.
